Innovation TitleAmbient ware potato storage technology in Uganda
Innovation description Improved individual and collective ambient units were designed, introduced, and tested to promote the storage of ware potatoes, reduce post-harvest quantity and quality losses, mitigate market price volatility, and ultimately, sustainably increase the income of small-scale farmers in Uganda and the benefits for all actors in the value chain. Coupled with adoption of appropriate post-harvest practices, the technology can maintain marketability of stored potato for up to three months while keeping storage losses.

Stage of InnovationStage 2: successful piloting
Year (Stage)2021
Stage Descriptionintroduced pilot stores are still in use for storing ware potatoes and a thorough cost-benefit analysis has proven the economic viability of improved stores whose adoption has allowed farmers to benefit from higher profit margins than for rudimental traditional stores. Improved individual stores should be recommended over collective stores.
