Innovation TitleSampling Protocols and Near-Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy (NIRS) Calibration Models as Breeding Tools for Screening of Roots, Tuber, and Banana Crops for Quality Traits in Uganda and Peru
Innovation description The protocols and the models are used for determining the nutrients of RTB crops and RTB-based products. Using a cheap and simple sampling approach, robust results were obtained from the calibration of a portable NIRS device for total carotenoids content (TCC) and dry matter content (DMC) on cassava genotypes segregating for carotenoid content and dry matter content.

Year (Stage)2021
Stage DescriptionDemonstrated usefulness of near infrared reflectance spectroscopy as a high-throughput way of phenotyping RTB crops and products quality. Benefit resource-constrained research institutes that cannot afford reference methods for NIRS calibration and supports the existing effort in the deployment of the portable NIRS device for rapid, accurate, and flexible phenotyping alternatives.
