ABOUT US

To advance the existing technology for accelerated phenotyping of canopy and early vigor parameters we design this project to disentangle the canopy size and structure components based on the 3D point-clouds generated by Hi-Throughput phenotype platform "LeasyScan" at ICRISAT based on deep learning-based algorithms development.

OUR IMPACT

Goals

Integration of existing phenotyping systems into crop improvement programs (CGIAR and NARS) and development advance the relevant phenotyping techniques with requirements of product profile to support breeding programs

Objectives

1. Assessment of phenotypic variations in components of canopy size (i.e. tillering, leaf appearance, and leaf longitudinal and lateral expansion) and canopy structure in sorghum diversity panel using high throughput-phenotyping platform “LeasyScan” 2. Development of algorithms to disentangle the components of canopy size and structure from the 3D-point clouds generated by LeasyScan, implementing automated 3D-point-clouds data processing 3. Explore the functional associations between canopy size

Problems and Needs Analysis

Breeding for improved varieties for water-limited environments has been slow, especially in developing countries, mostly because of the highly varying and unpredictable drought environments and lack of tools to capture, dissect and understand the complexity of interactions between crops and environments (G x E). Canopy establishment in time and space are obvious determinants of temporal plant water usage and likely carry the information on crop water-use efficiency during its life cycle.

Intervention Strategy(ies)

The existing HTP platform LeasyScan provide the 8 canopy dynamics parameter to screen breeding material. This project has been designed to identify three more traits tiller/branch number, canopy appearance rate and canopy expansion rate which have proven equally important and could bring further benefits to crop improvement programs nationally and globally.
