Sustainable Development Goals Contribution

Approved in 2021 and currently being rolled out, the policy will help to provide a sustainable, practical and accountable framework for protecting marine biodiversity, sustaining productive fisheries and improving livelihoods.

In 2019, Worldfish via the USAID funded ECOFISH project, achieved a landmark success in facilitating the official declaration of the 3,188 km2 MPA in and around the Nijhum Dwip seascape of the Bay of Bengal, through Govt. gazette notification reflecting the importance of conserving hilsa and other megafauna. Following the declaration, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock (MoFL) assigned the Worldfish team from ECOFISH II to develop a management plan as a legal instrument for the management of the Nijhum Dwip Management Plan

WorldFish scientists conducted further work  to strengthen the evidence on the co-management for ecosystem productivity and equity.  Three evaluations were designed, delivered and published for Hilsa fisheries – indicating co-management and livelihood investments have positive returns for productivity and resilience . The evaluation guided the revision of Hilsa Fisheries Management Action Plan (HFMAP) for 2020 -2030 and advocated for its approval. Approximately 24 management measures have been recommended.

ECOFISH II prepared and submitted a stakeholder-driven Nijhum Dwip Management Plan to MoFL with technical assistance from the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) and WCS (World Conservation Society). The plan has now been approved by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock (MoFL).
