ABOUT US

This project aims to build soil organic matter to improve fertility and health, through the identification of Best Management Practices (BMPs) in many village in Pakistan.

Period of Implementation

Dec 10, 2013 - Dec 31, 2016
Total Budget

USD 1,417,625.00

OUR IMPACT

Goals

Enhance soil organic matter and health in villages from Pakistan through implementation and discovering of several techniques

Objectives

To demonstrate and test best management practices concerning the capacity to maintain or built soil organic matter (SOM) to improve soil health resulting in more effective soil moisture conservation and soil fertility and reduced dependence on chemical fertilizers. To develop and disseminate agricultural extension messages, information, materials and tools to be used in Punjab, Sindh and elsewhere in Pakistan for building SOM, improving soil health

Problems and Needs Analysis

Low soil organic matter/soil fertility Degraded soil health Imbalance/improper use of fertilizer Lack of information at farmer level

Intervention Strategy(ies)

Demonstrate and test best management practices concerning the capacity to maintain or built soil organic matter (SOM), improve soil health resulting in more effective soil moisture conservation and soil fertility and reduced dependence on chemical fertilizers. Develop and disseminate agricultural extension messages, information, materials and tools to be used in building SOM, improving soil health, applying the “4Rs” (right type of fertilizer applied in the right amount, at the right time and in the right place) and balanced fertilizer application.

Impact Pathway

A Selection of farming practices, survey and identification of possible resources of organic matter, using or referencing of extension materials by public and private sectors, these will contribute with improving soil fertility developed between public and private sector including possibly new acquisition and use of OM by farmers and demonstration site on build SOM, using modified farm machinery and this support farmers to recognize benefits through demonstration of improved practices and have better opportunities to adopt these practices Increasing incomes and employment (1.3) and enhancing benefit from ecosystem goods and services (3.2). Thus can reduce poverty (1) and Improve natural resources systems and ecosystems services (3) Also the dissemination of developed tools to farmers with workshop and consultation provided by ICARDA, USDA and Pakistani institutions support with decision tools completed, promoted, and made accessible (internet and smartphones) to farmers and agricultural professionals in the provinces of Punjab, Sindh and possibly elsewhere in Pakistan, thus farmers and agricultural professionals will have access to new tools and information and being utilizing them to improve the fertility of their soils. Increasing resilience of the poor to climate change and other shocks (1.1) been an important factor to reduce poverty (1) . This would lead to enabled national partner and beneficiaries, an IDO of the CGIAR strategic goal capacity development (D).
