The Feed the Future Bangladesh Aquaculture and Nutrition Activity aims to sustain positive aquaculture sector growth through an inclusive market system approach. This is a five-year assistance activity awarded by the United States Agency for International Development to WorldFish. BAA works in the Bangladesh Feed the Future Zone of Influence (ZOI, consisting of 21 south-western districts) and the Zone of Resilience (ZOR, two districts in the southeast affected by the Rohingya situation).
• Increased productivity of aquaculture production systems, • Strengthened aquaculture market systems with particular attention to expanding opportunities for women and youth • Increased awareness and adoption of nutrition-related behaviours, with a particular focus on women and youth.
The overarching objective of the Feed the Future Bangladesh Aquaculture and Nutrition Activity is to achieve inclusive aquaculture sector growth through a market system approach.
The Feed the Future Bangladesh Aquaculture and Nutrition Activity will contribute to Development Objective 2 (DO2) of USAID’s Country Development and Cooperation Strategy (CDCS), 2011-2016: “Availability, Access, and Utilization of Domestically Produced and Nutritious Foods Increased”. DO2 seeks to foster inclusive and sustained economic growth in agriculture, including the growing aquaculture sector. This Activity will directly contribute to the achievement of DO2 level Intermediate Result: IR 2.1 Sustainably Increase Agricultural Productivity IR 2.2 Improved Access through Market Systems IR 2.3 Improved Nutrition & Dietary Diversity. The development hypotheses of the Feed the Future Bangladesh Aquaculture and Nutrition Activity are: 1. If systemic improvements can be made to the aquaculture market system in the ZOI then the productivity, production and profitability of aquaculture businesses operated by both women and men will increase through: ● Increased, gender equitable access to affordable productivity enhancing products (quality fish seed and feed) and services (knowledge, banking, equipment). ● Improved relations between value chain actors (fish farmers, wholesalers, retailers) to aggregate purchase of inputs and supply of fish and fish products with special emphasis on improving business relations and networks of women. ● Improved market linkages for women and men pond fish farmers and fish buyers in destination markets through better and gender responsive information, logistic and cold chain management. ● Gender sensitive formal and informal rules and regulations that facilitate the growth of aquaculture-based businesses. 2. If production and productivity of aquaculture in the ZOI increase and there is improved awareness and adoption of nutrition -related behaviour and practices: ● Sales of pond fish at satisfactory profit margins by both women and men will encourage continued Household (HH) investment in fish pond farms. ● Household consumption of nutrient-rich fish derived from production models which optimize opportunities for both fish sales and consumption will also increase.
