By Spring 2020, an online information system will be developed to provide public high quality data on climate variability, with the aim of facilitating climate change adaptation and mitigation decision making in Central Asia.

Average annual temperatures across Central Asia since the mid 20th century have increased from 0.5°C in the south to 1.6°C in the north, making the region most vulnerable to climate change. Building resilience to climate’s mounting impacts like melting glaciers in uplands and droughts in lowlands has become a dire priority to reduce poverty and enhance prosperity in the region, about 60 percent of which consists of deserts.

To address climate challenges in Central Asia, ICARDA jointly with iMMAP will develop the Central Asia Climate Change Information Platform. The initiative will be carried out within the World Bank-supported project Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Program for Aral Sea Basin (CAMP4ASB). The agreement was reached during the Central Asia Climate Change Conference held in Tashkent on 3-4 April 2019. CAMP4ASB is a five-years initiative led jointly by corresponding state agencies and CAREC, the Regional Environmetal Center for Central Asia.

By Spring 2020, an online information system will be developed to provide public high quality data on climate variability, with the aim of facilitating climate change adaptation and mitigation decision making in Central Asia. It will serve to help policy-makers, communities and civil society to access, analyze, and visualize public-domain data to enhance awareness and assessment of changing climate.

The platform will offer interfaces and tools for data visualization like GIS to layer data and map risks and hotspots, screening and modeling tools to support analysis for climate adaptation and mitigation.
