ABOUT US

A project intervention is proposed targeting the two countries of Burundi and Rwanda. Borrowing lessons from the on-going 5CP project, three major activities will be implemented in three years to address the major outbreak of CBSD and CMD. The activities include: a) introducing and testing new varieties with dual resistance to CBSD and CMD; b) development of a cassava seed system; and c) developing the capacity of NARS.

Period of Implementation

Apr 5, 2017 - Jun 30, 2020
Total Budget

USD 2,500,000.00

OUR IMPACT

Goals

The overall objective is to increase cassava productivity in Burundi and Rwanda through development and deployment of CBSD and CMD resistant varieties, as well as the establishment of a system that will produce high quality virus-tested seed and facilitate its dissemination to farmers. The specific objectives are: a) to introduce and test new varieties with dual resistance to CBSD and CMD; b) to develop a clean cassava seed delivery system for foundation seed; and c) to build the capacities

Objectives

The specific objectives are: a) to introduce and test new varieties with dual resistance to CBSD and CMD; b) to develop a clean cassava seed delivery system for foundation seed; and c) to build the capacities of NARS and other key stakeholders in cassava breeding and seed systems.

Problems and Needs Analysis

This project seeks to address the two diseases. Thus support is being requested to support the adoption of a holistic approach to mitigate both CMD and CBSD by introducing, evaluating and selecting new dual resistant cassava varieties, and establishing a sustainable system for the dissemination for high quality planting material.
