ABOUT US

Rangelands in Tunisia cover 4.5 million ha, about 25% of the country's total landmass. The traditional system has now been replaced by an uncontrolled one. Current legislation has contributed to the disappearance of the traditional common rangelands governance system. For this reason, the project aims to develop a new pastoral code specific to rangelands and maximize society's ability to manage and protect natural resources.

OUR IMPACT

Goals

Reduction of rangeland soil degradation to avoid diffusion of desertification.

Objectives

An improved Tunisian pastoral code that enhances sustainable and decentralized natural resource management and reflects traditional Tunisian rangeland management approaches and knowledge.

Problems and Needs Analysis

Rangelands in Tunisia cover 4.5 million hectares, about 25% of the country's total landmass, the majority of which encompasses arid areas. The area of rangeland affected by severe erosion is estimated at 1.8 million ha. Rangeland degradation is costing the country over US$ 32 million annually. To this total may be added the cost of transforming former pastoral land into cultivated land, making the value of the loss totalling around US$100 million per year. This problem persists because current legislation has contributed to the disappearance of the traditional common rangelands governance system, which had defined rangeland resting periods and access for entitled user groups in order to preserve resources.

Intervention Strategy(ies)

To achieve the desired objective, the project will build a good and strong partnership with the Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture to develop new rangelands and pastoral policies. Through training and meeting with stakeholders, new knowledge and skills will be acquired and the new improved policies adopted.

Impact Pathway

The potential benefits of this project from the development of new rangeland code management with a focus on pastoral policies would be substantial at the economic, social and environmental levels. Economic benefits include the reduction of costs to transform pastoral land into cultivated land. Training activities will promote women and youth involvement and skills development related to the governance of common natural resources. Environmental benefits include the reduction of soil degradation and the halt of desertification. The adoption of new improved policies, thanks to the Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture's participation, will enhance the sustainability of rangeland natural resources management. The new knowledge and skills acquired by the professional and technical staff of various stakeholders (research institutions, farmers) will help in adopting and applying new policies and technologies generated to sustain the project's achievements. Training of NARS researchers will equip them with knowledge and skills to develop date palm crop management technologies.
