ABOUT US

The project is designed to operate through bringing key partners from the public and private sectors, across research, extension, market, and governance institutions to work together in an iterative co-learning cycle, where options are tested against context and lessons learnt fed back into the cycle. This requires capacity strengthening within these key institutions and locally, nationally and regionally to facilitate interaction amongst them, that forms the core of the proposal.

OUR IMPACT

Goals

The goal of the project is to reduce food insecurity and improve livelihoods of poor people living in African drylands by restoring degraded land, and returning it to effective and sustainable tree, crop and livestock production, thereby increasing land profitability and landscape and livelihood resilience.

Objectives

Identify and articulate lessons learned and develop good practice guidelines for restoring productive capacity of drylands; Obtain information on the impacts of land restoration on the ecosystem; Develop tools, methods, and guidelines for scaling up successes in land restoration for profitable and sustained land management. Identify areas suitable for out-scaling; Convert the empirical knowledge generated by the program into knowledge products and make these globally available.

Problems and Needs Analysis

Land degradation currently affects over 40% of the world’s land resources, negatively impacting ecosystems and their ability to sustain productivity. Restoration of degraded land can be a key pathway to achieving food security and exiting poverty for some of the most vulnerable people living in Africa’s drylands. The major challenge when scaling land restoration interventions is to adapt them to the wide range of ecological, economic, sociological and institutional contexts that exist across scales, from individual households to villages and landscapes. While specific technical interventions to restore degraded land may in themselves be simple, selecting, adapting and combining solutions to suit local contexts that will facilitate wide scale adoption, requires innovative new ways of engaging farmers and other stakeholders.

Intervention Strategy(ies)

The project is designed to operate through bringing key partners from the public and private sectors, across research, extension, market, and governance institutions to work together in an iterative co-learning cycle, where options are tested against context and lessons learnt are fed back into the cycle. This requires capacity strengthening within these key institutions and locally, nationally and regionally to facilitate interaction amongst them. The capacity strengthening is achieved by doing (the co-learning cycle is a capacity strengthening strategy that is propelled by the learning achieved through using planned comparison of options by context, rather than only trying best bets over narrow ranges of context). The approach will create durable communities of practice able to better use resources to make an impact on land restoration at scale.

Impact Pathway

The research ‘in’ development model embraced in this programme, integrates the impact pathway into the project cycle. The project operates through engagement with development partners, influencing the way they interact with smallholder farmers and thereby accelerating impact. Previous PAR approaches have focussed on pilot sites and assumed that when options have been refined then either they or the process by which they were generated can be scaled up and out, but this often doesn’t work because of fine scale variation in context. What is appropriate for the pilot site is not necessarily widely applicable as context changes, local adaptation is required. Our theory of change recognizes variation in context from the outset, characterizes this and embeds trials of options across an appropriate range of context to determine what ingredients work where and for whom. This co-learning paradigm departs from technology transfer in favour of fostering technology development amongst appropriate constellations of actors.
