ABOUT US

The proposed project will scale out a package of combined interventions including on-farm green energy generation, water rationalization, transforming unutilized land for food production, and providing agronomic, irrigation and market advisory services for the beneficiary farmers. To increase the impact of women farmers in agriculture requires their empowerment. Project activities will focus on knowledge sharing and capacity building of women farmers, and schemes to strengthen their role in decision-making. The project will be implemented over one year in the Kafr El Sheikh, Menya and Qena governorates, directly targeting 3,053 smallholder farmers who will be equipped with tools, and improving capacities of 100 agricultural extension and irrigation advisory services officers including female farmers and officers.

OUR IMPACT

Goals

The project’s goal for resilient food security will be achieved through sustainable agricultural productivity, livelihoods and environment, and improved capacity of the government’s agriculture support services to the rural communities in Qena, Menya and Kafr El Sheikh Governorates

Objectives

This project provides the Egyptian government with swift transformative actions to enhance the conveyance and field application of water efficiencies and productivity. The overall goal of the project is to empower rural communities in Egypt to withstand the shocks impacting agriculture and food security. To reduce threats to food security and create resilient food production systems, demand-driven needs require workable solutions.

Problems and Needs Analysis

The long-term threats to the Nile, Egypt’s primary water source for agriculture, from climate change and damming are becoming more acute. They affect the country’s ability to feed not only it’s rapidly increasing population, which is currently over 114 million, but also the nine million refugees, mainly from Libya, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. The problem was recently exacerbated as food imports became more expensive due to the rapid depreciation of the Egyptian pound in 2024. Other challenges facing the agriculture sector in Egypt at the field level include land fragmentation, unreliable and inequitable water distribution among farmers, outdated extension systems, low investment, and high reliance on conventional on-farm management practices. As a direct result, many of the rural population already face challenges in achieving energy and food security, with increased competition for diminishing natural resources.

Intervention Strategy(ies)

This includes using methods and techniques to improve water productivity in irrigated agriculture for sustainable land and water productivity development.
