OUR IMPACT

Goals

The project focuses on innovation and scaling of technologies in rain-fed production systems in Morocco and Lebanon; irrigated production systems in Egypt and Sudan and Agro-pastoral production system in Jordan. The major crops in the rainfed and irrigated systems were wheat (bread and durum wheat, barley), food legumes (faba bean and Kabuli chickpea) and forage crops (legume and grass species) and associated production technologies. The Agro-pastoral farming system covers improving range productivity, improving cactus (food and feed), restoration of degraded land and animal health

Objectives

The objectives of the AFESD funding is to deliver products (crop cultivars), information and knowledge, services (training and seeds) in the five targeted countries of Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, and Sudan. It also integrates food crops, forages, range and integrated crop and pest management practices targeting rain fed (Morocco and Lebanon) and irrigated (Egypt and Sudan) agro-ecologies. The agro-pastoral (Jordan) production system is targeted in Jordan.

Problems and Needs Analysis

Forage research and seed production is very weak to support farming communities to solve their feed problem in Lebanon and other Arab countries. This activity was designed to support public, and private seed production and delivery. This component is implemented In Morocco and in partnership with INRA to address challenges of the rain-fed cereal based production system where the size of agricultural production is significant (3 million ha wheat; 2 million ha barley; 300,000 ha food legumes). A key element for the choice of Morocco was the excellent level of scientific knowledge among the local scientists and their strong and historical interaction with ICARDA and the existence of varied agro-ecological environments. A comprehensive survey of farmers’ variety adoption and seed systems has been conducted and indicated that the varietal replacement rate is extremely slow, with most farmers grow wheat varieties that are more than 30 years old. In addition to the dissemination of the new technologies obtained under the previous project funded by AFESD, this new project will also strengthen the interlinkage between physical research and socio-economic considerations.

Intervention Strategy(ies)

Technology transfer will be supported by making seeds of improved crop and forage legumes accessible to farmers through formal and informal seed systems. Efforts will be made to narrow the knowledge and skill gaps of researchers and farmers in the five centers of excellence countries. For better implementation of the project, ICARDA will assign country level project coordinators and an overall project coordinator among the team members of the project. NARS from each target country will nominate their own co-investigator to the project, which will allow for better planning, monitoring and evaluations of the project and better interactions with NARS staff and farmers. In each country, an annual review and planning meeting will be held to evaluate the progress of the project and its synergy with other AFESD funded for large impact. Product profiling from the CGIAR Excellence in Breeding approach will contribute to modernizing the crop breeding activates in the four countries.
