The proposed $12million 5-year project seeks to develop and prove a functional, commercial seed yam seed system in Nigeria and Ghana to benefit smallholder farmers through timely and affordable access to high quality seed yam tubers of improved varieties. YIIFSWA-II is based on a three-pronged approach: (i) demonstrate the profitable business opportunity in using the Aeroponics System (AS) for basic seed yam production and (ii) provide technical and business advisory services for private seed

OUR IMPACT

Goals

The ultimate goal is to ensure that all the advances made in establishing the system in YIIFSWA-I are fully transferred to and operationalized by National Agricultural Research Institutes and private seed companies, while enhanced on-farm good agronomic packages are accessed and utilized by seed and ware yam farmers for increased productivity and income generation. The expected impact from implementation of YIIFSWA-II over the next five years will be improved livelihoods of at least 1.6 million

Objectives

(i) empower smallholder ware yam producers with the seed of improved varieties for increased productivity resulting in increased income, (ii) develop a functional, and sustainable seed system that delivers sufficient quantities of high quality seed of improved varieties to farmers at the right time and at prices that encourage adoption, (iii) raise the awareness of the economic impact of the yam sector for increased investment and prioritization from national, regional and international program
