Sustainable Development Goals Contribution

The GIFT Multiplication center and hatchery at government fish farm demonstrated farmers' interest in adopting GIFT. In 2021, a new scheme was prepared to expand the uptake to private sector.

WorldFish provided technical inputs and support to Fisheries & Animal Resources Development Department (FARD) to complete the formal process of application, inspection by the national committee, revision and submission of the final proposal for establishment of genetically improved farmed tilapia (GIFT) Multiplication Center (MC). The approval obtained from Government of India, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries in Feb 2018. Subsequently, FARD approved an investment of INR 16,400,000 (USD 225,000) in 2019 for  the construction of the state of the art GIFT Multiplication Centre and hatchery at government fish farm in Kausalyaganga. This facility started production of mono-sex grower fry from January 2020.  Approximately 257 farmers benefitted by taking up GIFT for production of market size fish and market linkages.

In 2021, to make available the quality seed in required quantity and at right time,  the scheme of “Establishment of GIFT Tilapia Hatchery" was started to establish GIFT hatcheries by private hatchery operators and entrepreneurs. A primary focus of the intervention has been that of women integration in aquaculture, which has contributed to women empowerment, livelihood improvements and nutrition for many women-led households.
